BaselArea posts record result

BaselArea enjoyed an extremely successful 2012. With the establishment of 91 companies, the organization achieved its best result for years. The number of foreign companies setting up business in the region increased from 18 to 29.

BaselArea assisted and supported a total of 91 companies setting up business in the Basel region and thus made an important contribution to the growth of our economic area. Of this number, 29 were companies from abroad, an increase of 61% over the previous year: 8 of these companies came from Germany, 4 each from France and Great Britain and 3 each from the Benelux region and the USA. The remaining companies were from India, China, Italy, Japan, Canada and Scandinavia.

Altogether, BaselArea successfully acted as intermediary for 31 real estate properties, which was an increase of 19%. Eleven of these were properties for regional companies, and the others were for start-ups, businesses from abroad and companies moving here from other cantons. As a result, 411 new jobs were created or existing jobs preserved.

In the third year of partnership between BaselArea and Canton Jura, the two parties deepened relations. Thanks to support from BaselArea, six companies set up business in Jura, which accounted for 40% of new establishments in Canton Jura.

The year 2012 also brought change and a new sense of optimism for BaselArea. The organization undertook a review of its strategy at the beginning of the year and elaborated three possible approaches. In the process that followed, the Board of Directors opted for one of these approaches halfway through the year. With this approach, existing markets will be retained, processes optimized and new paths taken for identifying potential customers.

Since 1 June, BaselArea has been offering its international clientele not only to cantons Basel City, Baselland and Jura, but also to the Fricktal region. In view of its geographical position, Fricktal has long tended to gravitate towards the Basel region and therefore falls neatly within the catchment area of services offered by BaselArea.

BaselArea is responsible for the international promotion of the economic region of Basel. The joint economic promotion of cantons Basel City, Baselland and Jura, as well as the Fricktal region, assists foreign companies in establishing operations and advises start-ups. The services of BaselArea are available to interested parties free of charge.
