Actelion CEO wins entrepreneur award

On Sunday, Dr. Jean-Paul Clozel, founder of the Allschwil biotech company Actelion, won Ernst&Young’s World Entrepreneur of the Year for 2008.

The prize was awarded, amongst other things, for Clozel’s achievement in building a company with a market capitalization of almost 6.5 billion francs in just 11 years.

Actelion was founded in 1997 and is a leader in the development of low-molecular medicines for the treatment of pulmonary diseases.

“It is astonishing how quickly Jean-Paul Clozel has built up Actelion from nothing to a market capitalization of practically 4 billion euros, and to have achieved this in a highly competitive and complex sector”, says Greg Ericksen, Global Vice-Chairman of Ernst&Young for Strategic Growth Markets. “His vision and passion have enabled him to write one of the best-known success stories in the biotechnology sector.”

Ernst&Young’s Entrepreneur Of The Year award is the most prestigious business prize for entrepreneurs.
