Basel Technology Park – the new address for young technology companies in Basel North

Starting in June 2011, the Basel Technology Park will offer young, innovative companies flexible office and laboratory space. Young companies here have the opportunity to work, research and exchange ideas with other companies under one roof. Infrastructure, rooms and other services are shared by the companies that rent space here. For the first time, Basel-Stadt now has suitable infrastructure for young high-tech companies in the shape of the Basel Technology Park and the Basel Inkubator, which has been in operation for a year.

Thanks to very good underlying conditions and the concentration of life sciences and chemical companies, the Basel region is regarded as one of the most attractive locations for technology companies worldwide. But so far, other regions and cities have mostly taken the lead in attracting start-ups of young high-tech companies. Better use is to be made of the potential in this area in the future. For this reason, the Canton of Basel-Stadt is increasingly promoting the establishment and development of high-tech companies. This promotion is conducted partly through regional networks and services within the i-net BASEL program and partly through the expansion of local infrastructure. The recently opened Basel Technology Park is a crucial element in this promotion.

The park is part of the Stücki Business Park in Basel-Kleinhüningen and, from 1 June 2011, will offer space of around 1400 m2 in the form of offices and ready-fitted laboratories. Start-ups can also benefit from the shared use of infrastructure, such as meeting rooms, storage facilities and a high performance IT network. The open design of Basel Technology Park and its proximity to other technology companies also fosters interchange between the companies.

The services offered by the Basel Technology Park are aimed at young technology companies that are founded in the region or want to settle here. The park offers a setting that is geared in particular to the needs of companies from the life sciences, the chemical industry, nanotechnology and environmental and energy technology (cleantech). Basel Technology Park works closely with the Basel Inkubator. The Inkubator is funded jointly by the University of Basel, the University of Applied Sciences for North-West Switzerland, the start-up agency EVA and the Canton of Basel-Stadt and is aimed especially at young people from universities who are seeking to start up their own companies.

The establishment of the Basel Technology Park was actively promoted by the Canton of Basel-Stadt and the Swiss federal state secretariat for economic affairs, SECO. Using resources from the inward investment fund, the canton has rented the space for 10 years and offers it to companies at the standard market rate for rents, but under flexible conditions tailored to their needs.
