Abbott attracts new jobs to the Basel region

The American company Abbott is basing its new Generics Division in Allschwil and thus expanding its presence in Switzerland.

The latest investment decision represents a new departure for Abbott: Allschwil in Canton Baselland will be the headquarters of a new division with an international focus. This will be the first time that a pillar of the Abbott Group is built up outside the USA.
Abbott set foot in Allschwil last year, when the US company acquired Solvay Pharmaceuticals and with it the existing Solvay subsidiary in Baselland with around 180 employees. At present, the workforce numbers about 200 people; this number is set to rise to 240 in the medium term.
The decision to opt for the Baselland location was said to be due to the good supply of labour in the region. Allschwil is the headquarters of the new “Established Products” division, where the main focus of the international business is on branded generics especially for around 15 so-called emerging markets. The youngest division of Abbott expects double-digit growth particularly in key markets such as India, Russia and China. The new division achieves sales of around 5 billion dollars. As part of the expansion in Allschwil, there will be a strengthening, for example, of Global Marketing, Development and Quality Assurance.
