Bachem invests in Bubendorf

Bachem AG continues to thrive. The company is now building four new facilities in Bubendorf at a cost of 150 to 200 million francs and aims to create up to 400 new jobs. The management confirms that this is thanks in part to the concession granted by the canton.

The peptide company Bachem, which has branches in the USA, UK and Valais and employs a total of about 700 people, is expanding. In the next ten years, it plans to build four new facilities at its headquarters in Bubendorf BL. Over the same period, between 300 and 400 new jobs are to be created for "highly qualified" people. This amounts to a doubling of today’s workforce in Bubendorf.

Peptides are in demand
The success of the company, founded almost 40 years ago by Peter Grogg, who today is chairman of the board, is due to the increasing demand for peptides. Peptides are small protein molecules. They are used as active ingredients in more and more medicines, e.g. for the treatment of prostate and breast cancer, diabetes and osteoporosis. The manufacture of peptides is very complicated and, in some cases, can take up to two years. "We are market leaders in the manufacture of peptides and supply almost every pharmaceutical company throughout the world with active ingredients", says Michael Hüsler, CFO of the Bachem Group.
