Canton Basel-Stadt plans further tax reductions on company profits

The governing council of Canton Basel-Stadt is striving for a maximum tax rate of 18 percent. It has already passed the revision of the relevant laws for consideration by the Grand Council.

The bill provides for a further staggered reduction in the maximum profit tax rate to 18 percent by 2017. This is in line with the intention of the governing council to preserve and reinforce the competitiveness and attractiveness of Basel-Stadt as a business hub.

The planned reduction is linked in turn with economic development and the level of cantonal debt. If the bill proposed by the governing council is passed into law, company tax will fall from its original 24.5 percent in 2007 to 18 percent as from 2017. Within 10 years, the tax on company profits would thus have fallen 6.5 percentage points, which amounts to a 27 percent decrease.
