Novartis impresses with record figures

Even in the crisis year of 2008, drug manufacturer Novartis has posted record sales and profits.

The Basel pharmaceutical company Novartis increased its net profit by a cool 25 percent in 2008 to as much as 8.2 billion dollars - despite higher taxes and the cost of financing the 25 percent stake in ophthalmics manufacturer Alcon.

The operating result even jumped by almost a third to 9 billion dollars, as Novartis announced on Wednesday, while sales grew by 9 percent to 41.5 billion dollars. Thanks to the good business year, the Board of Directors is recommending a higher dividend: at CHF 2 per share, it should be around 25% higher than in the previous year.
