Swiss plans a major expansion of operations at Basel’s EuroAirport

As from its 2011 summer timetable, SWISS will be expanding operations at the EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg together with its partner British Midland International (bmi). In cooperation with bmi, it will now offer flights between Basel and London Heathrow three times a week. SWISS will also include Copenhagen and Rome in its flight plan and step up its Hamburg route to two daily flights on weekdays.

With the introduction of the summer timetable on 27 March, SWISS is beefing up its operations out of EuroAirport together with its partner airline bmi. To make the most of the market opportunities between the trinational region and one of Europe’s largest airports, SWISS and bmi will together adjust their flights to Great Britain. In cooperation with SWISS, bmi will operate three flights to London Heathrow on weekdays and one flight to Manchester with an Airbus A319. This will more than double the number of seats available on flights to Great Britain.

“We are delighted to be able to offer our customers from the trinational region a greater number of flights to the hub of our partner bmi and also to one of the most important airports in Europe”, says SWISS CEO Harry Hohmeister. “Basel and the trinational region are an attractive market for us with its strong pharmaceuticals and chemicals cluster”, explains bmi Chief Commercial Officer Jörg Hennemann. All bmi flights between Switzerland and Great Britain will be operated as codeshare flights with SWISS. The Basel-London City route will no longer be offered by SWISS. Customers from the trinational region can still fly to London City via Zurich.

The SWISS route network out of Basel will comprise a total of 15 destinations in summer 2011: Rome, Copenhagen, Hamburg, Barcelona, Prague, Brussels, Zurich, Budapest, London Heathrow, Manchester, Frankfurt, Munich, Dusseldorf, Vienna and Istanbul.
