Joint spin-off incubator of Basel universities

The University of Basel, the University of Applied Sciences of North-West Switzerland, the Canton of Basel City and “EVA – the Basel life sciences start-up agency“ signed an agreement on 12 March 2009 for the establishment and operation of a “spin-off incubator”.

With laboratory and office facilities, the “incubator” is primarily aimed at researchers from the University of Basel and the University of Applied Sciences and will provide them with infrastructure at favourable conditions, along with consultation and coaching services. This seedbed is designed to encourage the growth of promising ideas and inventions from the fields of Life Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, Nanosciences & Nanotechnology, Information & Communications Technology into fully fledged start-up companies. Young entrepreneurs are to receive support in the founding phase, and the commercialisation of research results is to be fostered.

 

The Canton of Basel City is supporting the incubator for 5 years with a contribution towards building the infrastructure and towards the rental costs. The installation of the laboratory and office facilities will be funded by the University of Basel and the University of Applied Sciences of North-West Switzerland.

 

The spin-off incubator will be located in the Stücki Business Park (www.stuecki.ch) and is expected to start operations at the end of 2009. It will be under the stewardship of “EVA – the Basel life sciences start-up agency”, which will also be responsible for the coaching of the prospective entrepreneurs (www.eva-basel.ch). The main shareholders are the cantonal banks of the two Basel cantons.
