New research centre in Muttenz BL
The parliament of Canton Baselland has approved 16 million francs for a research institute.
Canton Baselland is supporting the establishment of a polytronics centre in Muttenz BL with a total of 15 million francs. It is a private, non-profit-making institute - a branch of the Centre Suisse d'Electronique et de Microtechnique SA (CSEM) in Neuchâtel NE.
The canton aims to provide sponsorship of 3 million francs a year from 2009 to 2013 and acquire a shareholding in the institute with an additional 1 million francs. This stake in the organization should provide the canton with a seat n the board.
According to government councillor Urs Wüthrich, the research centre for microtechnology and nanotechnology will add further strength in the future to the region of North-West Switzerland as a centre for Life Sciences and also create new jobs.
Muttenz BL is also home to the School of Life Sciences, a department of the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW). It can be assumed that valuable synergies will emerge between CSEM and the FHNW.
BaselArea welcomes the decision of the cantonal parliament of BL and looks forward eagerly to the establishment of this top-flight research centre.
